1879 Tay Bridge disaster

From the Happy Haggis a snippet on the Tay Bridge disaster, the full casualty list can be found here

28th December 1879

During a violent storm the centre section of the bridge collapsed, taking with it a train which was running over its single track. The train left Edinburgh at 4.15pm bound for Dundee. Around 75 lives were lost, including the son-on-law of the bridge engineer Thomas Bouch. The number of victims is deduced a ticket count from St. Fort Station in Fife, being 72 passengers and 3 crew. Not all bodies were found. For more information visit Wikipedia’s page or the excellent page at the Scotsman newspaper.

Among those killed in this disaster were a William Robertson aged 21 and his brother Alexander aged 23, from 100 Foundry Lane. Both were labourers.

Walking in our ancestors footsteps

Lindsay and I are planning a trip to Victoria in July. Its a getaway for us, a much needed break, and given that we have not had a holiday since or honeymoon back in 1984, its time for some “us” time.  I am going to blog the planning and execution of our trip here.
This trip is something I have wanted to do for a long time, to travel where my forebears travelled, although in a somewhat more comfortable fashion, and who knows maybe to stand where they once stood…

Breaking down those brick walls (Robertson)

I found what looked to be a wonderful resource last night, in the form of the TalkingScot forums. On the off chance that someone reading it may be able to  point me in the right direction to look for my James Robertson  I posted a message late last night and woke this morning to find that the wonderful readers have managed to locate my Robertsons.!!!

Twenty years of searching, and all of a sudden the brick wall comes down.

To Sarah, Annette and Andrew THANKYOU!

I will update the Robertson page and post the info.

Thoughts on Ancestry and Coincidences

I was just sitting here thinking about the multi national family I have, not just in my immediate family which is, Daughters fiance is of European ancestry, Sons wife is of Koori ancestry, my own Husband is Scots-English, my sisters are married one to an Aussie of Greek ancestry, the other an Aussie of Maltese ancestry.

Looking back we have Irish marrying English – both were convicts sent out here in the very early 1800’s. A bit strange considering how the English persecuted the Irish at that time! I guess desperate times call for desperate measures?

We have Scots, we have Welsh. We have English who stopped off in New Zealand, had kids, and then the kids came here too, so I guess we own a small part of New Zealand as well.

Then there is the Jewish side of my family, where it appears currently that we have a Polish Jew who married a German Jew, they moved to England, had kids in Manchester, the son grew up, moved to South Africa, married a Jewish girl from Birmingham, they had their kids and packed up and came to Sydney, where it appears they all married outside of their faith.

Then there is the Robertson-Gorrie connection.  I am an Aussie born and bred, my other half was born in the UK, having moved here at 6 years old.

When we first starting dating it was strange to find out that his dads surname is actually Robertson -Gorrie the Robertson apparently being his Paternal Grans name, my maiden name is Robertson. It’s going to be interesting to see if there is a connection somewhere back there – that is if I can ever find my James’s family!!!!

It’s no wonder when people start making racist comments I get angry, maybe we should all take a look backwards and shake that family tree, you never know just what you might find!

The things you think of late at at night….
